Tuvar Daal Recipe: Tuvar Daal, also known as Arhar Dal, is a lentil dish made from split pigeon peas. It’s a staple in Indian households and is cooked in various styles across different regions.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup washed and drained tuvar / arhar dal

  • 1/4 cup chopped onions

  • 1/4 cup chopped tomatoes

  • 1 green chilli chopped or split

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 2 dry Kashmiri red chillies

  • salt to taste

  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)

  • 4 crushed garlic (lehsun)

  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)

  • 4 curry leaves (kadi patta)

Directions

  • Pressure Cook: Put dal, onions, tomatoes, green chili, turmeric, and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker. Cook for 3 whistles, then let the steam escape before opening.
  • Combine and Cook: Add the cooked dal mixture to the pan. Stir and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on medium heat, occasionally stirring.
  • Final Touch: Add coriander, mix, and it’s ready to serve hot!
  • Enjoy your Gujarati tuver / toovar dal!
